General DescriptionThe DS90CR281 transmitter converts28bitsof CMOS/TTL
dataintofour LVDS(LowVoltage Differential Signaling) data
streams.A phase-locked transmit clockis transmittedinpar-
allelwith thedata streamsoverafifth LVDS link.Every cyclethe transmit clock28bitsof input dataare sampledand
transmitted. The DS90CR282 receiver convertsthe LVDS
data streams back into28 bitsof CMOS/TTL data.At atrans-
mit clock frequency of40 MHz,28 bitsofTTL dataare trans-
mittedatarateof280 Mbpsper LVDS data channel. Using40 MHz clock, the data throughputis 1.12 Gbit/s
(140 Mbytes/s).
The multiplexingofthe data lines providesa substantial
cable reduction. Long distance parallel single-ended buses
typically requirea ground wireper active signal (and have
verylimited noiserejectioncapability).Thus,fora 28-bit wide
databusand one clock,upto58 conductorsare required.
Withthe Channel Link chipsetasfewas11 conductors(4
data pairs,1 clockpairanda minimumofone
ground)are needed. This providesa 80% reductioninre-
quired cable width, which providesa system cost savings,
reduces connector physical size and cost, and reduces
shielding requirementsduetothe cables’ smaller form fac-
tor.
The28 CMOS/TTL inputs can supporta varietyof signal
combinations.For example,7 4-bit nibblesor3 9-bit (byte+
parity)and1 control.
